Where it all starts

With this page does the diary of a hobbit in search of adventures commence. This book, besides telling those things and events that happen throughout my voyage, is intended to leave a lasting memory of my experiences that will help future generations of hobbits that leave their home for the perilous way of adventure seeking. I talk about adventures because I’m leaving the old Shire for new and unexplored lands (at least unexplored by me). Gandalf didn’t come knocking at my door requesting me to join a party of dwarves, as he did for Uncle Bilbo; neither did Bilbo ask me to visit the elves in Mirkwood, as he used to (now he lives with Frodo far, far away, or so does Mr. Gamgee say) I decided this myself. Perhaps it was the Tookish side in my family, or maybe I am turning out to be a little too ‘queer’, for hobbit standards. I wouldn’t know. Neither do I know the real purpose of this pursuit, but then, I really don’t know what it is that I’m pursuing. What I do know, however, is that I must leave this place forever, never to come back, because even if by happy chance I return, it won’t be me who returns, but another hobbit wholly changed.

So, this is it. Today I start my journey, like Uncle Bilbo so long ago at his eleventy-first birthday:

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

And thus the adventure begins...
